andrei barrett (b. 2003) is an interdisciplinary artist, based in brooklyn, ny, and portland, or. his practice draws from his chronically online upbringing to satirically examine the iconography and language behind american systems of sexuality and gender. referencing twitter meme culture, gay role-play pornography, and parody compilations, his work considers how power is performed through constructed conventions of heterosexuality and masculinity. parodying these frameworks, he utilizes found images, objects, and texts to suggest the performativity of these gestures. through recontextualization, he imbues these symbols with a queer futurity that, in turn, offers the potential for eroticism, critique, and mischief.
in 2025, he received his bfa in studio art from new york university. he is a recipient of the 2024 martin wong award, and has exhibited work at 80wse, commons gallery nyu, and national arts club.
